Crypto Wallets Explained: Hot, Cold and How to Choose
A crypto wallet does not actually hold coins. It holds the keys that prove you own coins recorded on the blockchain.
Whoever controls the keys controls the funds. That is why choosing a wallet is one of the most important decisions you will make.
The two big categories
Hot wallets are connected to the internet. They are convenient for frequent use.
Cold wallets stay offline. They are far harder to attack and better for long-term storage.
Wallet types compared
| Type | Example form | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|---|
| Exchange (custodial) | Account on a trading platform | Easy, recovery help | You do not hold the keys |
| Mobile wallet | Phone app | Free, convenient | Phone loss or malware risk |
| Desktop wallet | Computer software | More control | Vulnerable if PC is infected |
| Browser extension | Add-on for web apps | Quick access to apps | Phishing target |
| Hardware wallet | USB-style device | Keys stay offline | Costs money, must be kept safe |
| Paper or metal backup | Recovery phrase record | Immune to hacking | Can be lost or damaged |
Custodial vs non-custodial
- Custodial: a company holds your keys. If it fails or freezes accounts, you may lose access.
- Non-custodial: you hold the keys. Nobody can freeze your funds, but nobody can recover them for you either.
A common saying sums it up: not your keys, not your coins.
Recovery phrase basics
When you create a non-custodial wallet, you receive a list of 12 or 24 words.
- Write them on paper or engrave them on metal.
- Store copies in separate secure places.
- Never type them into a website or send them to anyone.
- Treat anyone who asks for them as a scammer.
Choosing the right wallet for you
- Small amounts for learning: a reputable mobile wallet or exchange account is fine.
- Medium amounts you rarely touch: consider a hardware wallet.
- Large long-term holdings: use a hardware wallet with a properly stored backup.
Security habits that matter
- Download wallet software only from official sources.
- Test with a tiny transaction before sending a large one.
- Double-check addresses character by character.
- Keep your device and wallet software updated.
- Use a separate wallet for experimenting with new apps.
Losing your recovery phrase or giving it away is the most common way people lose crypto permanently.
